Rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis) is a plant rich in active ingredients that, in certain cases, can be beneficial in various areas of health. For this reason, it is classified as one of the most popular medicinal plants of all time.
Next, we will explain all its properties as well as the different ways to prepare and use it: infused, alcohol, essential oil, honey and, of course, as a culinary spice.
Rosemary properties
The properties of rosemary are provided by its components, among which are: flavonoids, tannins, rosmarinic acid, rosmaricin, vitamin C and iron. In view of this, it provides the following benefits:
- It improves digestion and reduces the most common complaints, such as: bloating, flatulence and heartburn.
- It reduces pain during menstruation, as well as the most common symptoms that accompany it (migraines, fluid retention, etc.).
- It facilitates the function of the liver and gallbladder and as a consequence is a good remedy for jaundice.
- Combat anemia thanks to its high iron content.
- According to some research hypotheses, rosemary could help reduce blood cholesterol levels.
- Thanks to its flavonoid content, among other substances, it has antioxidant properties.
- Since it has antiseptic and healing properties, it helps to disinfect and heal wounds.
In infusion
Rosemary is said to be a very beneficial natural remedy in cases of food poisoning. On the other hand, a rosemary infusion is believed to be one of the easiest ways to get your input. Specifically, it is said that the most appropriate thing is to drink an infusion, after the meal, to facilitate digestion.
Elaboration
- We will put a glass (250 ml) of water to boil. When the boiling begins, add a teaspoon of dried rosemary leaves and let it boil for 3 minutes.
- We will turn off the heat, cover the casserole and let it rest for another 5 minutes.
- We will strain the infusion and it will be ready to be taken.
Rosemary alcohol
Rosemary alcohol is an ancient remedy for refreshing the skin, calming inflammation that causes cramps and contractures, and improving overall circulation.
Elaboration
- We will need a glass container that can be hermetically closed.
- We will fill it with fresh rosemary plants, if possible freshly picked. The best time is when the plant is in flower.
- We fill the container with 96-proof alcohol (available over the counter in pharmacies).
- We close the container and let it marinate for 15 days in a dark place.
- Every day we will shake it for a few moments.
- After this time we will filter the liquid and keep it in a dark glass container and tightly closed, in a cool and dry place.
Essential oil for hair
Essential oil is a format that has a very pleasant aroma and is a very convenient way to have rosemary, always at hand. It is very beneficial, for example, for the health of our hair, since it stimulates its growth. Therefore, it can be used as a natural remedy to prevent its fall.
You can simply add a few drops of the oil to our regular use shampoo. If we want to make a specific remedy, we can mix a few drops of rosemary essential oil with coconut oil and use this mixture to massage all the hair. We will let it act for 30 minutes and then, we will wash our hair.
Rosemary honey
Rosemary honey is what bees produce when they mainly drink the flowers of this medicinal plant.
When it is raw and unprocessed honey, which is the ideal way to consume this healthy food, this honey is characterized by having a thick texture and a fairly light color.
Rosemary honey combines the medicinal properties of these two foods (rosemary and honey), making it a very effective remedy for:
- Remove mucus.
- Facilitate digestion.
- Improve intestinal transit.
- Relieve throat irritation.
As a culinary spice
Rosemary is a very common spice in Mediterranean cuisine. It is a widely used condiment, especially in Italian cuisine, to flavor all kinds of recipes, from breads, focaccias to pasta dishes.
One way to always have a rosemary dressing on hand is to whisk in extra virgin olive oil with a branch of fresh rosemary inside. Since it has a very intense flavor, it will be enough to introduce a single branch. The important thing is to keep it in a tightly closed container. As the days go by, the oil will take on more flavor.
And remember…
Now that you know all the ways to take advantage of rosemary, feel free to include it more often in your life. And remember, although this is a product of natural origin with multiple benefits, it is not capable of replacing any medical treatment.
