Turmeric Natural Treatment For Nail Fungus
Turmeric is attributed anti-inflammatory properties, therefore, it is considered that it can contribute to the relief of various health problems, including fungus in the nails.
Onychomycosis (that is, nail fungus) is a health problem that can be very annoying. It alters the color, thickness and shape of the nails, and it can also cause an unpleasant smell.
It is an infection by dermatophytes or yeasts that, in a suitable environment, can proliferate without problems. Although they usually do not represent a serious health problem, their presence can cause weakening, breakage and total loss of the nail.
When nail fungus is painful and makes it difficult to wear footwear and perform daily activities, it is necessary to seek appropriate treatment, for this, you should consult your doctor.
Turmeric, a spice with potential
According to some beliefs, in addition to the treatment prescribed by the doctor, a remedy with turmeric can be used.
Turmeric ( Curcuma longa ) is a root that belongs to the same family as ginger: the zingiberaceae.
Although most of its applications have to do with gastronomy, it is also often used as a base to prepare home remedies, since it is attributed, above all, anti-inflammatory properties, due to its curcumin content.
Why fight fungi with turmeric?
Turmeric is said to help fight pathogenic microorganisms that cause nail fungus and help alleviate the weakening and discoloration caused by this problem.
According to a study published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, curcumin can inhibit and reduce the growth of different microbes and bacteria.
- Curcumin, its main active compound, has an antifungal and antibacterial effect that helps slow the growth of yeasts and dermatophytes.
- Provides extra nutrition to the cuticles and nail surfaces. Thus, it increases its strength to avoid breakage.
- Due to its content of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals, it is a great ally to counteract the damages that usually develop from its continuous contact with all kinds of substances.
Turmeric Recipe for Nail Fungus
In order to enhance the effects of turmeric against nail fungus, it is proposed to combine it with virgin coconut oil. This ingredient has antibacterial and antifungal compounds that, when absorbed, help slow the growth of fungi.
In turn, thanks to its essential fatty acids and antioxidants, it provides moisture and nutrition to the cuticles, controlling excess dryness and constant breakage.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons of organic coconut oil (45 g)
- 3 tablespoons of turmeric powder (30 g)
Utensils
- Glass jar with lid
Preparation
- Melt the coconut oil, which should be 100% virgin, and when it is melted, mix it with the turmeric powder.
- Make sure you get a creamy product and remove it from the heat.
- Let it rest for a few minutes and, when it is warm, store it in the glass jar.
- Once it solidifies, proceed to use it on the nails.
How to use
- Take the amount of turmeric remedy that you consider necessary and rub it on the nails affected by the fungus.
- Let it absorb well for 30 to 40 minutes and rinse.
- If you like, apply it on the soles of the feet and other areas susceptible to the development of fungi.
- Repeat its use every day, until you notice a noticeable change in the nails.
Nail fungus needs to be treated
Nail fungus is a health problem that requires personalized medical treatment, since each case is different. In the first instance, the use of natural remedies is not usually considered, however, there are those who consider that they can use them.
Natural remedies are not always supported by scientific evidence, but rather by beliefs and assumptions, therefore, they are not 100% effective in all cases. Despite this, there are those who consider that they can use them as an adjunctive treatment.
Before resorting to a natural remedy, we recommend that you consult with your doctor. Otherwise, trying it could make the problem worse and interfere with the strategy set by the professional.
Remember that while natural elements can have beneficial potential, they can also cause interactions.
