8 Symptoms That Could Indicate Liver Cancer

Although the symptoms of liver cancer can be similar to some gastric diseases and can be confused, it is important to go to a specialist for an early evaluation and diagnosis.

Liver cancer is one of the most worrisome incurable diseases today, as it is not known exactly what causes it most of the time. Even though chronic hepatitis infections can sometimes be considered a cause.

The liver is the largest internal organ of the body and is responsible for multiple processes such as filtering the blood, purifying substances (such as bilirubin), but also for producing cholesterol and special proteins for the blood plasma, regulating coagulation and blood levels. amino acids in the blood, etc.

For all the processes in which it intervenes, when it does not work correctly (due to the existence of a disease), health suffers considerably.

As with other types of cancers, people with liver cancer do not usually have strong primary symptoms. However, there are some signs that could be related to the presence of disease.  Let’s see them below.

1. Abdominal pain and swelling

One of the symptoms that can indicate liver cancer is pain in the upper (right) part of the abdomen, where the liver is located, and that can spread to the back. Additionally, some patients may have abdominal swelling.

Both symptoms can be confused with digestive ailments, as this is a common symptom in various diseases.

  • The pain may intensify and become persistent as the disease progresses.
  • Experts from the American Cancer Association add that other of the most common symptoms of liver cancer are: 
    • Loss of appetite
    • Enlarged veins in the abdomen.
    • Enlargement of the liver and spleen.
    • Feeling of fullness after eating little.
    • Swelling or fluid buildup in the abdomen.

2. Upset stomach

Constant nausea and vomiting are another indication that something is not right in the body and that it needs to be given due attention.

Although both symptoms are common in multiple gastrointestinal diseases, it should not be ruled out that they may be related to a serious problem, such as liver cancer.

If you have concerns about your health, it is best to see your doctor for an evaluation. Keep in mind that nausea and vomiting does not necessarily indicate that you have cancer.

3. Hard nodule under the ribs

The experts of the Cancer.net portal indicate that “the presence of a hard nodule under the ribs, on the right side of the body, could be a tumor or a sign that the liver has increased in size.”

In case of noticing a mass in the body that causes tenderness, it is important to see a doctor for an evaluation as soon as possible. It is NOT advisable to resort to self-medication under any circumstances. 

4. Jaundice, a symptom related to liver cancer

Another possible symptom of liver cancer is jaundice. However, it must be remembered that this is not an exclusive symptom of this disease either. Therefore, when it is presented, it does not necessarily have to indicate that the patient suffers from cancer.

When the liver cannot properly purify excess bilirubin, the skin and membranes of the body turn yellow, as well as the whites of the eyes. This is called “jaundice” and is caused by improper destruction of red blood cells, which takes place in the liver.

5. Weakness or fatigue

One of the symptoms most associated with cancers is the feeling of excessive tiredness or weakness that causes great difficulty even in performing simple actions such as: taking the mobile phone or the television remote, going to the bathroom, and so on.

6. Weight loss for no reason

If the person is not following a diet to lose weight or following an exercise routine that may be causing rapid and noticeable weight loss, it is necessary to go to the doctor as soon as possible to find out what is happening.

One of the possible causes of weight loss is liver cancer. If it has been confirmed that this is the case, weight loss, added to inappetence or lack of appetite and difficulty in absorbing nutrients adequately, can lead to several complications.

7. Dark colored urine

  • Dark colored urine.
  • Pale or grayish stools.
  • Itching, fever, bleeding, abnormal bruising, etc.

White or whitish stools can also be a symptom of liver cancer. In case of presenting it, it is essential to go to the doctor as soon as possible.
